… That’s when stark reality set in—Cindy, Josh and I, all alone at home.
I was a Student Pastor at a large church in Virginia Beach, VA. We had some of the best friends there we have ever had in our lives. They loved us, prayed for us and supported us as best they could. The reality is, I am not sure how we would have navigated those early days of uncertainty without them.
But, as in a marathon, the crowd thins, and it’s just you, your family and a long road of life ahead with all of its twists and turns, ups and downs.
Our faith in God was essential to us. We asked the familiar question “Why” for a long time. Then, and I am not exactly certain how long that was, we started to ask a new question—“What?”
“What God, did You want to do in us and through us?”
Fast forward thirty-plus years and here we are. We are building an online community of diverse people who have one thing in common—A person who is very near and dear to them who was born with Down Syndrome.
In just six weeks our community has grown to nearly ninety members. We have parents, grandparents, siblings and caregivers. Republicans, Democrats and Independents—Young and old. We have an array or religious beliefs, racial and national origins, as well as socio-economic diversity.
It is beautiful to behold as we run in the marathon of life bonded together by the love for someone special.
Cindy and I want to be cheerleaders for you. Our hope is that you will want to be cheerleaders for us. The race is far less lonely when we realize—It’s not just us alone in this journey!
If you’d like to be a part of this community I invite you to join our newly created FB page – Parents, Caregivers and Siblings of adults with Down Syndrome.
Let’s do this—Together!
